Alexander Lubyantsev is a pianist who stands apart for his unusual and vivid interpretations. His dazzling technique and the rich tone of his playing won the pianist third prize at the XIII International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2007. At the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition, Lubyantsev won the critics’ Special Award.

Alexander Lubyantsev was born in 1986 in a musical family (his father is a choral conductor and his mother is a pianist) and began to study the piano at the age of five. The young pianist’s talent brought him public acclaim at an early age, winning him prizes at international competitions. Lubyantsev’s awards include the Grand Prix at the International Frédéric Chopin Competition in Narva (Estonia, 2001), first prize at the International Young Pianists’ Competition in St Petersburg (2002), fifth prize at the International Piano Competition in Sydney (Australia, 2004) and first prize at the International Piano Competition in Ruza (Russia, 2007).

As one of the most outstanding pianists of his generation, Lubyantsev has drawn the public’s attention not just in Russia but in Japan, Brazil, Estonia, Finland and the Czech Republic among other nations. He has appeared at numerous acclaimed festivals including the Summer Festival in Ohrid (Macedonia, 2007), the International Festival in Dinard (France, 2008) and the International Friendship Concert festival (Seoul, South Korea, 2010). As a soloist, Lubyantsev has appeared with various orchestras under the baton of such conductors as Christoph Poppen, Maxim Fedotov, János Fürst, Sergei Roldugin, Vladimir Stachinsky, Vladimir Spivakov and Gianandrea Noseda. Last year the pianist appeared with the Mariinsky Stradivarius Ensemble under Igor Gruppman, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 20.

Alexander Lubyantsev is frequently performing on tour throughout the 2012–2013 season. He has appeared with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra (Chopin’s First Piano Concerto) and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto) in the Republic of South Africa as well as taking part in a tour of Japan with the Belarusian State Symphony Orchestra (Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto). Alexander Lubyantsev’s engagements for the current season also include several recitals, among them appearances in six cities in South Africa, the XXXI International Piano Festival in Japan and the VI Spring Festival in Türi (Estonia).
Alexander Lubyantsev is currently continuing his piano studies at the Petrozavodsk State Glazunov Conservatoire (class of Viktor Portnoi) in addition to studying composition.
